CEAS III: Practice & Management of Occupational Ergonomics
Overview

This course provides concepts and principles of occupational ergonomics, especially as related to the manufacturing environment. For Part I, the reader should be prepared to spend 10-12 hours studying the 83-page manual titled "The Practice and Management of Occupational Ergonomics". Next, a 100-question multiple choice post-test must be completed with a passing score of at least 80% for course credit.

Part II allows for practical application of principles reviewed in the text. The reader should allow 4-6 hours for this section. Following the written directions, review the four case studies and videos, then complete the 6-step problem solving process using the worksheets provided for one industrial and one office job. Assume that you are evaluating the job and environment for the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male (people of any size or gender). A passing score of at least 80% is required for course credit and certification.

  • Understand how layout, equipment, and work processes influence musculoskeletal disorders and how to prevent them through ergonomics in design
  • Understand workplace design using the principles of anthropometry, reach envelopes, sit/stand/sit-lean options
  • Use anthropometry tables for evaluation and design criteria
  • Understand ergonomics design principles for manual materials handling tasks
  • Understand how to use the NIOSH Lifting Guideline and push/pull graphs for manual material handling evaluations
  • Understand the 6-step ergonomics problem solving process to develop successful solutions specific to the needs of your clients
  • Recognize, analyze, and recommend cost-effective ergonomics changes to the work area, machine and hand tools, and work methods
  • Review the certification process for professional ergonomists
  • Review the elements of an effective and professional client report
  • Demonstrate competency through the completion of 2 case studies and a comprehensive written exam

Requirements for completion and certification
  1. Passing score of at least 80% for the 100-question post-test.

  2. Passing score of at least 80% for the 4-page worksheets.

  3. A written report for one of the jobs. Report should be similar to example included.

    These requirements will be repeated throughout the course.

Certification / CEU's

Course participants must submit 100-question post-test which will be graded immediately on-line. The 4-page worksheets used with the videotaped case studies must be submitted directly to the Back School of Atlanta for scoring WITHIN 90 DAYS OF INITIATION OF THE ON-LINE COURSE. Copies of submitted materials and certificate of completion will be returned to participant within 30 days of receipt. If a score of less than 80% results, the participant will be allow to resubmit materials. Resubmission must be completed and returned to the Back School of Atlanta within 30 days of receipt for scoring. 16 contact hours/1.6 CEUs will be awarded for course completion. CEU's are calculated at the standard of 1/10 of a credit per 60 minutes of study, except in states where pre-approval of workshops are required by that state's licensing board, in which case the amount of CEU's credited may vary.
